THE BONNIES "OFF SEASON" WORKOUT

For those of you who missed this...I thought I would post it again. Thank you, Coach Fiske!

The Bonnies lift three days a week in the off-season, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Most lifts are about an hour long and intense. Our belief is that if you are not sweating by the time you are done, you are not working. We expect everyone to make themselves better, stronger and faster. Only when you commit and dedicate yourself to this process will you even begin to reach your maximum potential. The film below is only a small portion of what we do but it is a very important part.

Update...

Hi Everyone...

I have neglected the blog lately but that was by choice. We have been hard at work preparing for the coming season and I am really happy with what I am seeing. The team is working extremely hard in the weight room, the hardest I have seen in my 15 years of coaching softball at SBU. It will pay off in more wins in 2011.

The pitchers and catchers have been throwing for about three weeks and I am amazed how quickly they have taken to our new pitching instructor, Paul Furlong. He has done a great job just getting them started with the right mind set and work ethic. It is going to take a lot of hard work to get us where we want to be but the pitchers have set the bar high.

Our schedule is complete and Hawaii looms at the end of February. If playing in Hawaii is not enough to get you fired up then playing 2010 Women's College World Series participant, The University of Hawaii should give you chills. If playing that kind of competition does not get your blood boiling, then you are not alive! I am really excited about the prospects of the coming season.

The semester is coming to a close and I know the ladies are working hard on their grades. We take pride in our grades at SBU. They are the MOST important thing we do. Softball is the greatest game in the world but it can not and never will hold a candle to the importance of a great education. I sleep well knowing that the ladies in my care will get a quality and worthwhile educational experience. I salute all the student-athletes at SBU and across the country that make their academics the number one priority in their collegiate career. GO BONAS!

Mike

To all our Family and Friends...

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

The Next Step...

We finished up the 2010 fall season this weekend with games at UB and home against UPB. The fall is a time of learning and a time when the freshmen become familiar with their new team and surroundings. It is not always an easy time but I am very happy with this year's freshmen class.

Division I is so different from high school and summer ball that it sometimes takes players by surprise. Gone are the days of hitting .500 and striking out 12-17 batters every game. The new reality is that players are now playing against their equals on a daily basis for the first times in their lives. The goal now is to move to the top of the list again. It takes time and patience and most of all confidence and determination. If players think they can just keep doing what they did in high school or summer ball, they are in for a tough transition.

Our freshmen group has shined. They have listened and worked on what needs to be done to get better. Make no mistake, there were some tough times and there is much more to learn but I think we learned some valuable lessons and will be better for it.

St. Bonaventure Softball has always been so much more than just softball. It's about education and friendship. It's about preparing yourself for the future while playing the sport that you love. Make no mistake...we are here to win games but in the end, if a player can look back on her career and say that she made lifetime friendships, earned a college degree that prepared her for the rest of her life and can look back and honestly say that she put 100% effort and commitment into her four years, then the wealth of her college experience can not be measured in wins and losses.

"When you lose enough times, it makes you realize how difficult it is to win. If you can react the same way to winning and losing, that's a big accomplishment...quality is important because it stays with you the rest of your life, and there's going to be a life after your sport that is a lot longer than your sporting life." - Chris Evert Lloyd

"Winning has always meant much to me, but winning friends has meant the most."
-Babe Didrikson Zaharias

"The finish line is sometimes merely a symbol of victory. All sorts of personal triumphs take place before that point, and the outcome of the race may actually be decided long before the end." - Lance Malone

Nan Harvey Recap

The Bonnies did not finish up the Nan Harvey/Canisius Classic like they wanted to but there were some positives that came out of the weekend. Many of the upperclassmen did pretty well at the plate while he freshmen received their first taste of NCAA Division I competition.

Here are some hitting stats from the weekend...
Junior Brooke Frey: 3 hits (2 triples)
Freshman Ashley Snider: 5 for 13, 3 runs scored, triple (.385)
Sophomore Jessenia Andujar: 4 for 12, Double, 2 RBI (.333)
Senior Kara Morenus: 4 for 11 (.364)

The Bonnies are back to work and looking ahead to the best weekend of the fall. Our annual Alumnae Game is this Saturday at 1:00pm. Welcome back Bonnies!!!

Day One - Nan Harvey/Canisius Classic

The Bonnies put in a hard nosed effort today. With five possible starters out, Maureen Wells, Erin Nargi, Kristin Sullivan, Ashley Nowak and Shelly Seeger, the Bonnies pulled off a split losing to Niagara 11-1 and defeating UB 7-3.

The Bonnies are battling the injury bug but no one is playing with anything serious. Some aching quads and sore muscles are the norm for for the fall so it was great to see outstanding athletes gut through some aches and pains.

Some highlights of the day...The major highlight of the day for me watching junior Diana Phalon come back out after a tough couple innings against Niagara and help the Bonnies to a 7-3 win against UB...while dealing with Tonsillitis. Diana is one of the best competitors I have ever coached.

The day started with the debut of freshman, Jen Sansano who had a solid first outing for 5 innings against a very good hitting Niagara team.
Jen's Stats...
Innings (5), Runs (3) Earned (3), Hits (6), Walks (4) Strikeouts (3)

Another debut was of freshman shortstop Ashley Snider who had a great day at the plate...
Ashley's Stats...
AB (7), Runs (3), Hits(4), 3B(1)

We had some solid hitting from hitters up and down the lineup, although we struck out a little too often for my liking. Here are some hitting highlights:
vs Niagara...Junior Brooke Frey 2-4 with a triple
vs Niagara...Freshman Ashley Snider 2-3 with a triple
vs UB...Senior Kara Morenus 2-4
vs UB...Sophomore Jessenia Andujar 2-3 with a double
vs UB...Freshman Ashley Snider 2-4 with 2 runs scored
vs UB...Freshman Lindsay Stowell, Triple
vs UB...Senior Sam Rajski, big RBI single in 7th

So the Bonnies end the day 1-1 and play Canisius tomorrow at 10:00am to determine who will play Niagara in the championship game at 12:00pm. Let's go Bonnies!

A10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Andujar named A-10 Rookie of the Week

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Freshman Jessenia Andujar picked up her first career conference honor after being named Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Andujar went 2-for-3 in the loss against North Carolina A & T, tallying an RBI and two runs. The East Rochester, N.Y., native stole her first career base against Colgate and then went 4-for-4 against Norfolk State in the Spartan Clash

The outfielder hit her first career double and scored one run. She started all nine games for the Bonnies through the stretch, posting a .346 average at the plate with nine hits, four walks and three RBI.

The Brown and White continue their season on the road against Charlotte on March 27. First pitch is set for noon.

Maureen Wells named team co-Captain for 2010

Congratulations to junior Maureen Wells for being named team co-Captain. She joins seniors, Steph Narde and Sherri Thompson as the team's captains for the 2010 season.

"Moe" has really worked hard and has shown she can make mature decisions and take her game to the next level. She is a great communicator with both her teammates and the coaching staff which I consider one of the most important aspects of being a team captain." - Coach Threehouse

She joins a very short list of student-athletes that have served as captains since I started coaching in 1997. I am sure Maureen will represent that tradition in outstanding fashion.

Norfolk State Tournament

Our tournament at Norfolk State for March 13-14, 2010 was rained out. Seemed every game from New York to Florida was rained on at some point this weekend. Well...March does come in like a Lion.

GO BONAS!

The Coach's Perspective

Our 2010 southern swing was an interesting one. The weather cooperated with little rain (a rain out vs. Campbell University as the only blip) but the temps barely reached out of the 40's on most days. Actually, it is the same weather we will be playing in most of the season.

A 5-8 record is not something to jump for joy for, but we did get to see if the offense was improved and if we were going to compete when the going got tough. It looks like the answer to both is a, Yes. We had a day verses North Carolina A&T that I was disappointed with but we came out to compete in every other game. I think we learned that we can't just show up...we have to be at our best every day. That is the ONLY way you can compete with Atlantic 10 teams.

We came back hitting .229 as a team which is an improvement but it still needs to be higher. If we can get into the .250 range we can compete for a championship. Anything less and it will be tough to win in the A10. Defensively we played well for being the first 13 games on a real field and we saw progress from players that needed to step up. That is an encouraging sign. The pitchers threw well at times but we have to stay away from walks and hit batters. Any time you put more runners on...it makes it tough to stop good teams.

The most encouraging signs were how aggressive we were on the base paths and how we swung the bat on most days. We were looking to score a lot of runs. The biggest things we need to remember is that hitting is an art form. We can't go up looking to hit every ball out of the park...we need to look for great at bats when the game is on the line. If we do that, more and more clutch hits will come. Fundamentals are the Winning Edge...you win games by doing things right.

The TOP 5 Hitters through 13 Games...
.316 Shelly Seeger (JR) 6-19, 4 runs scored, 4 RBI
.308 Jessenia Andujar (FR) 12-39, 12 runs scored, 5 RBI
.278 Hali Enderby (FR) 5-18, 5 runs scored, 1 RBI
.243 Maureen Wells (JR) 9-37, 7 runs scored, 1 RBI
.235 Brooke Frey (SO) 8-34, 6 runs scored, 8 RBI
