The Fall Semester ends...

The semester has ended. I know the ladies are really happy that finals are over and they get a chance to spend some time with their families around the holidays. I am sure our grades will be outstanding once again...the team has been committed to academics for many years. I am always proud when the final GPA's come out.

It was a very productive fall semester. We had a successful fall season going 6-2 and we really came together as a team. Speaking to everyone last week, I heard lots of positive talk about how our team chemistry is very good. I hope it stays that way...it's the only way we can win a championship.

We have ordered our new uniforms for the spring. We are going to have a different look to us. You won't see much brown in them. We went to black and white with a touch of vegas gold. We went with Adidas with Adidas spikes. We are going to look like champions...now we have to learn to play like champions.

We still need some help raising donations to pay for the new uniforms and other program needs, so if anyone would like to help or knows of someone, please support the ladies. They are outstanding in everything they do.

We have an great schedule and I am looking forward to the spring. I told all the ladies that I was going to be selfish this spring. I want to win a championship THIS YEAR!! No more waiting. No more going to the championships and going home early. It's time to WIN one. Everyone of them responded by saying that was what they wanted most of all as well. When something is one of the most important things in the world to you, you will do almost anything to achieve it. I am going to put them to the test this spring. We have the potential to be great...but potential is nothing without hard work, dedication and commitment. EVERYONE has to commit to WINNING, to EACH OTHER and do EVERYTHING they possibly can, to make themselves and the team better. I know we have the players to do that!

Our non-conference schedule is a fair one but tough. Our southern swing will be a test of our road warrior blood. Barnstorming through the Carolinas will be a great time. Back home we face our toughest challenge in Canisius who has dominated softball in NY State for years. Coach Rappl is an outstanding coach. Niagara is always tough to play and the University at Buffalo is building a winner very quickly with a committed coaching staff and with players from around the country. We will have our hands full with the Big 4.

The Atlantic 10 is going to be stronger this season. Coach Sortino's Umass squad has been the best team in the Northeast for decades. Charlotte and Fordham are powerhouses. Dayton, St. Louis, St. Joe's and Temple are all on the upswing...saying nothing of George Washington, LaSalle and Rhode Island. I know the coaches in this conference and all of them are outstanding. They will make their teams better so we must be ready.

We have risen to a high level over the past 5 years but we need to get better. There are higher levels to achieve at. We can do it. We will do it!

Hope to see all this spring. Bring your rally caps and loudest SBU softball cheering voices. It's going to be a great time! GO BONAS!!!!

Flag Football Final...

Softball 24, Lacrosse 16. Both team played really well and it was a great time! The softball team was geared up from the start and took an 16-6 lead in the first half but Lacrosse came storming back with a safety that made is 16-8 then a touchdown to tie it up 16-16, late in the third quarter.

An interception by softball midway through the 4th quarter led to a touchdown with less than a minute left in the 4th. Softball was up 24-16 and Lacrosse took it down to the softball 10 yard line with 8 seconds left. Softball held the line and won the game 24-16!

The softball team got a little flustered as their lead dwindled but held on for the win by making some big plays down the stretch. Lesson learned about keeping your composure...you can't dwell on the negative, you MUST find a way to win the game. If we do that in the 2010 softball season, we will be very successful. A great job by both teams!! GO BONAS!

Alumni Game

The weather held and it was an incredible Alumni game! Thank you all for making it such a special day. I don't think most people know that even though I would love to win an A10 championship some day...the days that mean most to me is when we can get as much of the softball family together as possible. Family and friends is what life is all about. Winning just makes it that much more fun!

I will be posting pictures and recaps soon. GO BONAS!!

Bonnies Roll against Monroe

The Bonnies are off to a good start with a pair of wins (4-1, 7-2) against Monroe Community College. I was happy, for the most part, with what I saw. We had a great approach at the plate which we worked extremely hard on the first week back.

Our defense has always been strong but we have to get better at throwing out runners and making sure we are in our proper spots on cuts and specialty defenses. That just takes experience and lots of practice. We were aggressive and that is a positive...we will have to continue to learn how hard we have to play to compete against Division I competition.

Our true test comes this weekend at the Nan Harvey / Canisius Tournament in Amherst. I am looking forward to a strong week of practice and a great weekend in Buffalo! Game times are 10am (Canisius) and 12pm (Buffalo) on Saturday and 10am (Niagara) and 12pm (Championships Game) on Sunday. See you there!

A week away!

We are a week away! I have a lot of stuff on order and am hoping that it all gets here on time. I found our hitting discs on the front step today, shipped UPS right to the front door. We ordered a bunch of new hitting devices that will be good for practice. I know Coach Bechelli will be happy...he loves that stuff!

I patched up our old batting cage again..hopefully for the last time. We will be getting a new one for the 2010-2011 season. We are putting in a divide in the 1B side batting cage so we can make more hitting stations. Coach Bechelli and I are going to be cementing in some poles so we can put the SWING AWAYS on them. They will be located next to the newer cage on the 3B side.

There is all kinds of grass on the infield still so I am enlisting the help of Paz, Andy and JJ Janzy Jaynes. come Thursday. We have a lot to do on the field. We should be hanging the new windscreen this week. It will really dress up the field.

I am working on some bat racks and going to put in shelves for helmets in the dugout. That way everything is easy to grab and will stay dry. Maybe the sophomores can paint something cool in the dugouts this year to make it look even better.

Well...back to work!

Spring Trip Contests

We have decided to go to Charleston, SC this year for our spring trip games. Charleston is a city that we have visited before and have enjoyed what the city and area schools have to offer. The schedule has not been completed yet but we do have a doubleheader scheduled against the College of Charleston on March 3rd starting at 4pm. I will keep you updated on the schedule as I add contests.

Charleston is a wonderful city with many things to see and do. Our previous trips have been eventful from a canceled plane flight (we will be on a bus this year) to ghost tours out on the town. I plan on taking the team to some of the area "hot" spots and not only enjoying the entertainment the city had to offer but the educational opportunity of visiting such a historical town. I know Coach Matz will be excited...a university professor can never pass up the opportunity to explore such a cool place.

GO BONNIES!!

Summer Travels

So...I ended up in Binghamton, NY this past weekend for the STOP DWI TOURNAMENT. They always do a great job. I was able to see some outstanding talent and I hope to be able to turn the evaluations into some positive contacts and maybe some signings.

The whole time I was in Binghamton, I was getting updates on the Open Aunt Rosie's Tournament where at last count, over 15 current and former Bonnies were playing. I am sorry I missed it but duty called. Big shoutout to all the Alumns who won the tournament! I am proud of all of you. Another shoutout to all the current Bonnies who made the semi-finals as well. I am proud of all of you as well. The family keeps growing and becomes more and more successful every year.

I was able to have a wonderful dinner with Steve and Gina St. Clair in Binghamton. It is always a great time when I visit there. I also got to see some current Bonnies and their families. Everyone seems to be doing pretty well with an exception of an injury here and there. We will have everyone ready for the spring though!

I am looking forward to the fall season. Only 49 days till our first practice! I have a lot to do before then! Gotta go! GO BONNIES!

Trying this again...

I am going to try this blogging thing one more time. The last time I even wrote anything on the board was before we took our Florida trip. Back in FEBRUARY!!

How did the season turn out? How does a 1-16 start sound? It was not a pretty sight but through it all , the team kept their wits about them and knew that if they could win their A10 games we would make our fourth trip in the past five years to the Atlantic 10 Championships. Only four teams have achieved that level of success in that time: SBU, Umass, Fordham and Charlotte. Low and behold after a 12 inning, heart pounding, infuriating and unbelievable win in the last game of the regular season we succeeded in reaching our goal of making the championships. A 4-3 win against Temple sent us packing to New York City and the campus of Fordham University!

The championships did not turn out the way we wanted but the season was memorable and one that I will not forget. I pushed the team close to their limit at times but they always found away to respond when they most needed. That is a tribute to my staff and all the players. It was an absolute team effort. We underachieve for the first time in many seasons. Something I mean to rectify going into the 2009-2010 season.

I am optimistic about the coming year and see us maintaining our elite status in the conference. We only need to treat EVERY game like it is our last and we will be a team that no team wants to play. A team that will show its true talent every day with no complaints or excuses at the end of the day.

I am a week from heading out on the recruiting trail. I will see you all out there on the road! I will stay in touch. - Coach Threehouse

9 Day and counting...

We are nine days away from starting our trek to Florida for our first spring contests. I gave the team this past weekend off so they could get some must needed rest and to see family and friends before our hectic schedule gets underway. Our schedule takes us to Florida, Virginia, Missouri, Massachusetts, Buffalo, Moon Township, PA near Pittsburgh and Washington D.C. It's an ambitious schedule that will test our toughness as a team. I am positive this team is up for the challenge.

The pitchers threw live today and as always the pitchers are ahead of the hitters. It was a very productive practice which helped the coaching staff work not only on pitching and hitting but the mental game. It is usually a humbling experience the first time you step into the cage against quality Division I pitchers. It was a good start.

We have also been going over video with the hitters and working on their swings daily. Our new Swing Right Pro has helped us analyze swings and helped our players understand what needs to be done to be successful in the batter's box. It continues to be a valuable tool for us.
The picture to the left is Kara Morenus taking a swing this fall. She is compared to Olympian Lovianne Jung on the right. PICTURE PERFECT.

We had a chance to get outside on the turf of our baseball field last week. It was a 55 degree day with sprinkles but it gave us a chance to see some fly balls and get a smell of the air. Just a tease as for the next day the snow returned and the temp dropped 35 degrees. We have a big week ahead of us. We are in the RC for four practices which will be our chance to secure the defense and get ourselves ready for Niagara on February 28th. GO BONAS!

Let the Games Begin!

Hello Everyone! The first weekend in February marks the time that NCAA Division I softball teams to can begin their spring schedules. Two schools in the Atlantic 10 have begun play and have gotten off to a quick start. Here at SBU, we are continuing our process of becoming the best team we can be through some quality practice time. The team has been focused and sharp for the past couple of weeks.

We are 20 days away from our first games of the 2009 season and I know the whole team is getting excited but they also know before that day, we have a lot of work to do. Every practice is an important part of the process that will help us reach our goals. Everyone has been outstanding to this point. The key is to continue that work ethic. The cold of February and cabin fever can start taking hold but the team understands that is part of playing in the north. You have to deal with being inside, while preparing to hit the dirt running in sunny Orlando Florida.

I will be posting every Monday from now on and the night after each game. You will have links to both teams websites so you can read both sides of the story. A little like how Fox News pretends to be fair and balanced. Here at SBU we will give both teams their due evaluation of the game. So look Monday nights for highlights and analysis of each game. You will get a true taste of what its like in the day of an Atlantic 10 Conference team and a St. Bonaventure softball player. Feel free to leave your comments to us, to comment on the game or to just cheer us on!

GO BONAS!!

Orlando Trip

I have been getting many questions on where we are staying in Orlando. We are staying in 4x4 bedroom town-homes and will not be getting the address till about a week before we leave. My advice is to get lodging in Osceola, FL or even better, near Old Town, which is a neat little place minutes from the fields and will be near where we stay. Old Town has many little shops, restaurants, rides and other little things that makes your stay even more exciting. Here is Old Town's website. See you there!
